this job is an installation of a furnace and coil. the old unit was over 20 years old premier unit that was recalled by the gas co. as a fire hazard.
we cut out a hole in the closet and removed the old unit in pieces then installed the new unit in place through the same opening in the closet
hung unit with strapping material and connected to the gas line, vents and air conditioning line set fired unit . unit was working good

Phase 2 Clayson and Garrett 1970 Harpsichord structure repair

Repairing a structural fault in a very excellent 1970 harpsichord. Central heating may well have contributed to the shrinkage of timber components and having caused the problem. However, modern makers often use laminates which are possibly more stable when steamed and curved. In contrast, being of perceived highest quality in its day, this instrument used real wood throughout and the steamed pine bent side may have naturally changed shape in the nature of warping. Another possibility is that heating induced shrinkage of the base would have pulled the structure away from the frame then leaving the case to pull away and lose structural integrity.
The 1960s “piano frame” harpsichord revival harpsichords such as De Blaise, Sperrhake and Morley were seen to be a major advance in their day as they were structurally “bomb proof” to the abuses of the modern heated environment and less susceptible to such problems.
Clayson and Garrett were leaders in their day in scholarship of original instruments and were among the first to build with such authenticity. The structure of such harpsichords without a piano frame can be compared to the contrast between cars or old aircraft built on a chassis and the monocoque construction of modern aircraft and vehicles. Of course, in a musical instrument such as a harpsichord, the result is a more resonant structure and players prefer driving a Ferrari to a chassis based Land Rover.
However, once a component of the monocoque stressed body is damaged, the structure can fail catastrophically and that had been the case here.
In addition Cascamite glue was used which is very strong but simply breaks or cracks rather than allowing any movement. This is an argument akin to the use of lime mortar or concrete in historic buildings.
It has been repaired before but the previous repairer thought that it was only a split in the soundboard so cured the symptom rather than the cause.
